Mount and Blade is a hack n slash medieval game with a fun (if a little limited in places) SP game and an extremely addictive MP gorefest.
You can download and try the full game for free, but only improve your SP character to a certain level before it autosaves and kicks you off. I'm not sure if you can try multiplayer without buying, but it might be possible.
I really recommend this as there's a lot of depth to the combat system while being simple enough for new players to have fun too
