Study: Young racing fans travel in real life too rapid
Teenagers who drive in computer games like a hot tire, run the risk to behave in a real road recklessly and to respond more risks than the average of its peers. This conclusion suggests a study by Kathleen Beullens and two of her colleagues at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, as NewScientist reports.
In a first step Beullens inquired with their colleagues Keith Roe, and Jan Van den Bulck of first 2000 subjects and subjects aged 16-17 years whether they drive on the computer car race or play called 'drive-'em-ups, "in which a particularly rapid and reckless driving pays or even get points for driving and running over pedestrians. Two years later, the scientists sent off a second round of questionnaires to all those who now had a driver's license and tried to figure out, among other things, how often they are willing to take risks in road traffic and to go fast.
The statements of 354 test participants were finally analyzed statistically. The result: a carefree attitude to high speeds and risky driving behavior was statistically significantly associated with racing games, often with experience and drive-'em-ups in the teenage years. As a control condition using Beullens and her colleagues the way, the willingness to drive under the influence of alcohol car. Alcohol plays for virtual racing cars and drive-'em-ups do not matter and also questioned the novice drivers were not statistically in this respect. (Pek)

I'm pretty sick of reading these things.
It seems every problem regarding 18-30 year olds is blamed on video games by someone somewhere. They seem to totally ignore the idea of drink driving or reckless behaviour existing before 1990.
They could very easily prove that today's road users are more aware of the perils of driving because of the same video games if they wanted to. _________________ It's not the winning, its the taking apart |

I agree, I`ve been playing games since i was 13 (1993), I`ve never felt the need to drive like i do in games. People just find an excuse to target games because of there content, but, why not target all these terrorists and say what they do is "In a game". I`ve always loved GTA but i`ve never felt the need to steal cars or blow things up. If anybody should be to blame for all the stupid things that happen, It should be this PC society we live in, where people can`t be punished correctly to really learn the difference of right and wrong. All the Namby Pamby rules and laws to protect the 14 yr old Joyrider (who gets a slap on the wrist), or the 15yr Granny mugger who beats her half to death and then gets a harsh telling off.
SOCIETY IS A FOOL!!, But by the time the people who can do anything about it realise, it`ll be tooo late!

Sry Dant and Dan, but for me this post is in the section where it has to be: in the ROFL-part.
If you are sick because of that, I'am sorry. But I never felt that every single of the other ROFL-posts are funny to me either (but lots of them! ). |

I've read it is a Belgian study. As I am a Belgian, and a sceptic one wich is pretty rare. Them studies they make here always ends up in pointing fingers. Depending from the statistics provided. Wich in my opinion is completely useless. It's a case of human intuition, there is no statistic covering that. With or without videogames it still will be more or less the same outcome.
It's just a waist of time and money.
I don't bother these kind of study's, only makes me frustrated and mad.
Just enjoy beating Dan at the GP's and if you fail you can always trash your computer.
