I can't wait for this season for my team, Chicago Bears! Why?
A surprise advance to the playoffs from seventh place in the NFC didn't have a significant impact on long-term plans in the Windy City. Mitch Trubisky, one of the most painful and unsuccessful picks in Bears history, officially said goodbye to the team. A new era is expected to be ushered in with the selection of Justin Fields with #11 in this year's draft. Will Fields turn out to be the Bears' first franchise QB since the 1940s? Time will tell. For now, he is expected to be a replacement for veteran Andy Dalton, but I suspect he will take over the offensive reins by October at the latest.
Unfortunately for them, that offense doesn't look too colorful. Allen Robinson is the NFL's top receiver, but outside of him, the offense is vainly looking for players even of Pro Bowl caliber. Maybe RB David Montgomery. The Bears hiccuped with the trade in which they acquired Khalil Mack. The pass rusher has been performing up to expectations, but the draftee and high contract they gave up for him leaves them short on talent at other positions. In total, the club has only selected six players higher than fifth round in the last three drafts.
As with any young QB, offensive line play will be key. And this one, already not very impressive a year ago, may be even weaker. OT Bibby Massie said goodbye to the team. His replacement was supposed to be Teven Jenkins selected in the second round of this year's draft. To acquire him the club gave up three other picks. Unfortunately he had to undergo back surgery and his return in November is currently the optimistic scenario. In the pessimistic one, he won't play until next season. It is highly doubtful that acquiring Jason Peters, who was an absolute elite a few years ago but is now in his 40s and is a shadow of his former glory, will make any difference.
Ideally, the Bears wouldn't push Fields out onto the field too soon. However, Matt Nagy can't afford another season without success and Fields will play after the first signs of Dalton's weakness.
Maybe at least the defense will take some pressure off the young QB? Unfortunately unlikely. Khalil Mack is an outstanding player and together with Robert Quinn they make a very dangerous duo of pass rushers. With Akiem Hicks in the middle of the line and Roquan Smith and Danny Treviathan, the front seven can be an asset to the team. Except that none of those players will get the opposing quarterback if the secondary can't guard anyone.
Eddie Jackson is a very good safety, but he won't cover the entire field. Meanwhile, with the departure of Kyle Fuller, the top three cornerbacks are Jaylon Jackson, Desmont Trufant and Artie Burns, which is a rather unpleasant prospect for fans in Chicago.
Even if Justin Fields turns out to be who they have been waiting for in Chicago for over 70 years, it is unlikely that he will be able to lead this team to success in his rookie season. |
